There are four simple questions that can definitely change your life:
- What should I do more of?
- What should I do less of?
- What should I start doing?
- What should I stop doing?
That’s it. Simple, yet powerful. The catch? It ain’t easy. First of all, these questions are interrelated. Let’s say that you think you should exercise more (#1) or should start exercising (#3). The only way to do this is do less of something (#2) or stop doing something (#4). You might even have to do less of “nothing.” Even when you are doing “nothing, ” you are doing “something.”
Right now I work overtime at my day job as an accountant. After taking care of mundane daily tasks of cooking, eating, getting dressed, sleeping, etc., there are precious few hours left in the day. For question #1, I want to work on my goals more. I realize that something has to give if I am going to achieve the personal goals that I have set for myself.
I am currently watching almost no TV, so cutting TV won’t help. The answer for me is pretty obvious. I need to begin limiting my time on the Internet (please, not that!!!). I am definitely an Internet junkie. There is so much out there, and I love to learn. The problem is that is becomes an addiction, and I am becoming less able to focus. I am the king of keeping a million different tabs open, switching from site to site.
One thing that I have noticed is that my focus improves dramatically when I have no easy way of accessing the Internet. It happened when I went camping with my brother in Utah, and it happened when I stayed with my parents in Florida. It was amazing how it freed my mind up to really think. The question is: how do I free my mind up like this while still allowing myself to access the Internet occasionally? That’s what I need to find out.
In any case, my mission is to spend less time on the Internet and more time on my goals. What are you going to do?
